  • The horse breed, native of the region of Marvar (the southwestern Rajasthan), is nowadays rarely found; most probably because of excessive cross-breeding. The Marvari horse is very much similar to Kathiawari horse, stemming from Kathiawar (Gujarat) in the southwest Marvar. Coming in all colours, it is known for its strange inward curvature of ears in the shape of crescent moon.

  • Since 2009, the Marvari Horse Society of India, a governmental body and authority in the field of Marvari horse conservation, has been recording these rare breed horses. Recently the French NGO AFEV (Action – Formation – Education – Voyage) has launched the riding school at Gagrana (Nagaur), 200 km from Bikaner and 100 km from Nagaur southward, where one can join 20 Marwari horses registered on the society. Dames et Cavaliers is the riding school of the AFEV association at Gagrana in the district of Nagaur. Just 15 km away from Merta city, it is a halting place in Rajasthan where diverse activities equitation, horseback rides, horse’s holidays, horse riding, games of chess, puzzle, visit of Mira (the great poetess, devoted to Krishna cult) Temple and horse trekking in Gagrana and neighbouring – Nagaur, Jodhpur, Pushkar – are possible. Natacha Gallissot, President AFEV International, told that Dames et Cavaliers offers courses and lessons of equitation every day on reservation on usual reasonable fees. The horse is known for its multiple uses from pulling a cart to playing polo. Therefore AFEV equestrian training courses, along with making learn equitation skills, also emphasize the practices to take care at the end of working session. The MHSI (Marvari Horse Society of India) invites the interested persons and institutions for its Marvari horse conservation project. Dames et Cavaliers, with 20 registered Marvari horses, is an example in initial stage, Against all odds, it offers a real story of determination to conserve Marvari horses.
